SPLL Softball Divisions
South Portland Little League's softball program is organized into four divisions (plus tee ball) designed to provide safe, fun, and appropriately competitive experiences for each player. Little League calculates softball players' ages by how old they were on December 31st of the previous year. Learn more about League Age
Tee Ball (Ages 4-6)
Tee Ball is the entry-level division for boys and girls, focusing on fun, fitness, and fundamentals. It centers on instruction and can often be one of the most rewarding for volunteer coaches. Players are introduced to the basics: throwing, catching, hitting, positions, and baserunning. Coaches are on the field to provide instruction and serve as umpires.

Coach-Pitch Softball (Ages 6-8)
Coach-Pitch softball offers a fun, supportive introduction to competitive play, open to girls ages 6 to 8 who have been introduced to the basic skills through Tee Ball. While the environment is friendly, players still learn to hustle, communicate, and compete with enthusiasm. The focus is on building core skills — hitting off a consistent coach-pitcher, proper throwing mechanics, fielding fundamentals, baserunning, and game awareness.

Players will range in age from 8 to 10 depending on experience, skills and abilities. This level is a combination of player-pitch and coach-pitch. Players are required to wear a protective face guard when in the field, and batting helmets are required to have a face mask attached.

Majors Softball (Ages 10-12)
Majors softball is a competitive league for players who have mastered the core skills and abilities of Little League softball. An evaluation will be held in March to ensure players’ readiness and assess their skill. Most players at the Majors level are 10-12 years of age, although there may be occasions where a 9-year-old would be considered based on skills and abilities.
