Little League Softball 2025
South Portland Little League's softball program is organized into four divisions designed to provide safe, fun, and appropriately competitive experiences for each player.
Little League softball calculates players' ages by how old they will be on December 31st of that season's year. Click here to learn more about League Age.
Divisions
Tee Ball - Ages 4-5 (co-ed)
Tee Ball is required for new players in the Little League Age 4-5 bracket. (Reminder there is a difference between calendar age and Little League age, and many 3-year-olds can be classified as Little League Age 4). First-year Little League Age 5 players are REQUIRED to play at least one season of Tee Ball before progressing to Coach Pitch division. Players will be introduced to the basic concepts of baseball in a fun and safe environment. Coaches will seek to make this a highly engaging experience through the use of small skills stations in addition to traditional game experiences.
Minors - Coach-Pitch Softball - Ages 6-8
Coach-Pitch softball is intended for kids ages 6-8 who have been introduced to the basic skills through tee-ball and have progressed. All Little League Age 5 players MUST have played a season of Tee Ball prior to registering for Coach-Pitch softball. (Note: Little League Age may be different than your player's actual age). Players will learn fielding positions, throwing and catching skills, as well as hitting fundamentals. Coach-Pitch softball will play with a traditional nine-player defensive lineup, with coaches pitching to batters. Coaches will continue to focus on core skills development and teamwork.
Mini-Majors Player-Pitch Softball - Ages 8-10
Player-Pitch softball is intended for players who have mastered the basic competencies of throwing, fielding and catching in softball. Players will range in age from 8-10 depending on experience, skills and abilities. This level is a combination of player pitch and coach pitch. *Please note, at this level girls are required to wear a protective face guard when in the field and helmets are required to have a face mask attached.
Majors Softball - Ages 10-12
Majors softball is a competitive league for players who have mastered the core skills and abilities of little league softball. A tryout assessment will be held prior to the beginning of the season (details to follow). Players who were on a SPLL majors team last season are not required to tryout. However, ALL players are encouraged to attend the tryout assessment. Most players at the majors level are 10-12 years of age, although there may be occasions where a 9-year-old would be considered based on skills and abilities. *Please note, at this level girls are required to wear a protective face guard when in the field and helmets are required to have a face mask attached.
