SPLL Baseball Divisions
South Portland Little League offers opportunities to play baseball for boys and girls ages 4 through 14. In addition to practicing on-field fundamentals and the excitement of playing games in a competitive environment, Little League Baseball pridefully enlists the sport to strengthen its participants’ self-esteem and confidence.
While age is the principal determinant in a child's divisional placement, Little League baseball calculates players' ages not by the calendar, but by how old they will be on August 31st of that season's year. This increases the chances of children playing on teams with their classmates. Players may be placed in divisions outside their age group based on their ability, however, and try-outs and assessments are used to determine the placement of players in the Player-Pitch and Majors divisions. Player-Pitch Baseball (Ages 8-10)
Player-Pitch baseball is a more competitive division intended for players who have mastered the basic competencies of throwing, fielding and catching, but don’t yet have the size, skill, or maturity to play against 12-year-olds in Majors. Teams play a traditional nine-player defense and players do the pitching. Baserunning and base-stealing are active elements.
